A Game-Changing Test for Prion, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's Diseases is on the Horizon

Ronald Zuckermann and Michael Connolly hold a model of a protein in a beta sheet arrangement. Aggregates of proteins misfolded into this shape are the disease-causing agents in numerous fatal neurodegenerative diseases. The team's peptoid-coated magnetic beads can bind to these aggregates, allowing scientists to detect them in samples of body fluids.
There are currently no effective treatments for prion diseases, a family of fatal neurodegenerative conditions caused by accumulations of misfolded copies of a naturally occurring protein. But now, there is finally an effective way to test...

Dysregulation in the Brain Protein Profile of Zebrafish Lacking the Parkinson's Disease-Related Protein DJ-1

Dysregulation in the Brain Protein Profile of Zebrafish Lacking the Parkinson's Disease-Related Protein DJ-1

14 days ago   |   By Springer

Abstract
DJ-1 is a protein with a wide range of functions importantly related to redox regulation in the cell. In humans, dysfunction of the PARK7 gene is associated with neurodegeneration and Parkinson's disease. Our objective was to establish a novel DJ-1 knockout zebrafish line and to identify early brain proteome changes, which could be linked to later pathology. The CRISPR-Cas9 method was used to target exon 1 of the park7-/- gene to produce a transgenic DJ-1-deficient zebrafish model of Parkinson's disease. Label-free mass spectrometry was employed to identify altered protein...
